Lord Macbeth carried Caroline upstairs and laid her gently on the bed. Blood had stopped flowing from the cut on her head, but she still looked very pale. He pulled a chair up besides the bed and took hold of her hand and kissed it. “Oh my love” he whispered to his unconscious wife.

Eveline continued down the stairs listening out for the noise she had heard.
She realised the kitchen staff were moving around downstairs and Eveline could here them chatting as they worked, maybe they had dropped something? And that was the noise she had heard, she listened for a few minutes but heard nothing else.
