Lady Eveline moved from the window and sat down and yet she couldn’t stay still. Her mind was so agitated and unhappy that she couldn’t be comfortable wherever she sat.

Eveline looked up and realised she had arrived at Hope church, she hadn’t taken any notice of her direction when she was walking, her mind was too full of thoughts. It seemed however that just as her mind was intent on this place so had her footsteps been. She realised Sister Madeline had noticed her and was bustling over to say hello, Eveline wanted to be alone, to digest all the information that she had received but her breeding would not allow her to be rude and it would help her conceal the struggles going on inside.

When Naomi awoke the next day things seemed brighter as they always do in the light of day. The idea was still very scary, but quite unreal as well, as if yesterday had been a dream, but the sinking feeling in her tummy told her it wasn’t. She went about her chores for the day doing her best to keep her mind off things;
Brother Michael had told her Sister Madeline would call for her the next morning and take her to the church for a day and then she would be leaving for good at the end of the week. Naomi felt it was all happening so fast, just twenty four hours ago she had been blissfully unaware that her life was about to undergo such a huge change. (more…)

Sister Madeline went over to see Brother Michael when she knew he would be alone and Brother Peter would be out in the fields. She found Brother Michael on his knees in prayer and she stood quietly by as he finished his prayers, then he rose and showed her to the kitchen. Once they were seated and he had provided her with refreshments she introduced the subject.

Sister Madeline moved back to the church a week after Catrina was born, although she would have been happy to stay longer to help Eveline, Eveline wouldn’t hear of it. She said “You have already done so much for me I can’t possibly keep you away from your duties any longer and anyway I am less tired now and I think I can hire some help to come in, in the day time.” Eveline wanted her new little baby all to herself now that she was gaining strength to be able to look after her.
Another chance

Lord Marquis and Sister Madeline walked down the stairs and out of the door in silence. Lord Marquis set off in the direction of a secluded place he knew to the edge of his estate, with Sister Madeline trailing along behind him. She was carefully considering what she should say to him, she held little hope that whatever she said would have much affect. However she was conscious that this was her only chance and she wanted to make it count, Eveline’s future happiness would depend on him changing.
I couldn’t be happier

Lord Marquis was banished outside whilst Eveline was bringing another of their children into the world. He stood outside anxiously wondering how he was going to get Sister Madeline alone after the birth, before she had a chance to talk to his wife. The birth was long and hard work for Eveline, but finally she gave birth to a little baby girl and named her Catrina. Eveline was utterly exhausted but happy to have produced her first daughter.
Eveline held little Catrina and said to Sister Madeline “Isnt she perfect? Now our little family is complete, I am so blessed. I couldn’t be happier if I tried; my family is everything to me.” Sister Madeline did her best to smile, but knowing that her time to give Eveline the truth about her husband was very near she felt her smile was empty of real feeling. Eveline didn’t notice though, she was engrossed in her little newborn.

As summer began, Eveline’s due date grew ever nearer and she grew more contented every day as she contemplated being a mother again. She was hoping for a girl but a boy would not be a disappointment after all the trouble she had had bringing this child full term.

Since Lyndsay’s departure from the Marquis household things had changed considerably and only Lady Eveline preferred the more serious Sister Madeline to Lyndsay. In Sister Madeline, Eveline found an interested listener to all her hopes and dreams for a large family.

Lyndsay was working hard on the list of chores that Sister Madeline had left her and yet with the exception of working in the shop the rest of the chores gave her lots of time to think whilst her hands did the work. She went over the whole of her time at the Marquis house. It was weird she had only been there a few months but it seemed such a long time ago that she had left. However she knew really it was more that she had returned a different person.
